Band 8 Sample: Some feel that individuals should try to assimilate completely to the country where they live while others feel it is more important to preserve their native culture. Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

Introductory Statement:

It is commonly believed that immigrants should give in fully to the new country where they live. Moreover, they should devote themselves to the new culture so that they can become more open and opportunistic. On the other hand, there is a notion of preserving one’s native culture against the cultural changes that the new tides bring. The reason for that is the life-long traditions and festivities that the native culture tries to adhere to. Moreover, the native language also lives on with their children and strengthens the community. This essay sides with the former notion. And sees eye to eye with the fact that change is part of nature. The people should jump into that wagon that is taking them on.

Body Paragraph 1:

Right of the bat, assimilating to the country will mean that you will be stepping into the new culture. This will allow the people to learn new traditions and new languages. Which can definitely open a new area for their social life and career alike. Because they immerse themselves in new gatherings and festivities. It also helps people live more harmonically and in peace. For instance, America and Canada are now the topmost diverse countries on the planet which has allowed them to have a multitude of cultures, festivals, traditions and job opportunities. Moreover, Vancouver from Canada and California from America are highest in the happiness and liveable index in the world.

Body Paragraph 2:

On the contrary, people have a strong opinion on preserving the native culture because it grounds them and connects them with their roots. Parents of such beliefs tend to pass their ways to their children so the old ways live through them. Language being the foremost relic that suffers this. It can be seen in the juveniles who later visit their native country, that they struggle in speaking their parents language with the same proficiency and seem more detached to the traditions and festivities. There was an article published in the Medium website that showed how children of bilingual parents are becoming mono-lingual and clearly shows that within two generations they lose their grip on their native language completely. This results in the festivals not being celebrated in their new country.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, being open to the new cultures and traditions of the new country for an immigrant opens more doors that it would have if they cocooned in their old ways. Preserving the native language and culture is important but as the famous song by Bob Dylan says, “The times they are a changing”. And the rather then preserving the past, the people should consider the holy humanity as a single species and in the name of growth should pave the road for unification rather than bifurcation.
